Capital city Addis Ababa (Addis) hosts the African Union’s (AU) headquarters. There are 118 embassies, 4 Permanent Missions (US, Japan, etc.), 2 Delegations (European Union); all 54 African countries have some diplomatic representation in Addis. All nationalities need a visa. The easiest way is to apply here
for an e-Visa. AMSIC organizers will be eager to send you an invitation letter after hearing from you.

What about the water quality?
Currently, Addis Ababa is considered a region with very safe drinking water (85 % of water is low risk) compared to other regions of Ethiopia (only 7% of water is low risk in particular places). However, due to water shortages, most hotels and restaurants rely on water tanks, or occasionally on ground water. It’s advised to used bottled water for travelers to Addis or to other Ethiopian places.

What ‘s the preferred public transportation system in Addis?
Transport in Addis Ababa includes cars, minibusses, buses, meter taxis, and light rail. But meter taxis are the preferred public transportation system in Addis because of they are regulated and safe. It is also possible to use a minibus after rush hours.

Who speaks English (Addis and other major cities)?
The presence of international organizations, NGOs, and foreign embassies in Addis Ababa has led to the widespread use of English in the city. English is commonly used in business and educational institutions, and signs and menus are often written in both Amharic and English. Although English is spoken in Addis Ababa, the level of proficiency may vary among its residents. Addis Ababa’s youth is more likely to fluently speak English compared to older generations.
